The ancient art of Feng Shui can help create a space that will be conducive to a good night’s sleep. Feng Shui means wind and water. It is believed that these elements help determine your health, wealth and good fortune.
Taoists seek to harmonise the environment and create spaces that have good ch’i – life force. Plants and water are used to counteract the effects of pollution and noise, and attention is given to the placing of objects such as mirrors and lighting. The importance of nature and the elements is reflected in the use of plants, water and the design of the home and garden.
The importance of light and its influence on sleep dictates where the bedroom should be placed. In Feng Shui the correct positioning of the bedroom will influence health and good fortune. Ideally the bedroom should be as far as possible away from the main entrance and any roads. It should be behind the midline of the building and overlook a natural landscape.
It may not be possible to change the orientation of your home, but you may be able to make some changes that will enhance your sleeping environment. By becoming more sensitive to how your space affects the way you feel, you will be able to adapt your surroundings.
Feng Shui Your Bedroom
Take a good look at your bedroom and remember the golden rule. The bedroom is for sleep, and only for sleep. Remove anything that is unrelated to your quest for sleep. Try and keep the room clean and tidy and allow some fresh air into the room if possible. Use colour that makes you feel calm – many people find neutral tones help make them feel calm and relaxed.
Our bedrooms are often too dry and stuffy. Try and eliminate all artificial and toxic materials and use natural materials and soft textures. The use of screens, soft lighting, net curtains and transparent blinds will create an air of tranquillity.
You will sleep better if you are able control the light throughout the seasons. Have curtains or blinds that you can draw to keep out the light. Invest in a bedside light that you can control, or lights that you can dim. Making a relaxing environment will depend on your taste and what makes you comfortable.
Feng Shui pays particular attention to the placing of furniture. Where you place your bed will influence your view of the world. You may like your bed to face the door or the window so that you can see anyone entering or a pleasant view. Perhaps you can hear noise through the wall from the next door room. Think of the position that is less likely to disturb your sleep.
In Feng Shui, the bed should be positioned diagonally opposite the door. If the bed is directly in line with the door, a wind chime should be placed between the door and the bed and a mirror placed in line with the entrance.
Feng Shui tries to create harmony within the home and bring elements in from the outside environment. Flowers and plants may not be suitable sleeping companions, but a beautiful picture or photograph of a tranquil scene, will provide a reminder of your connection with the universe.
